I've always been fascinated by places. Big cities. Small towns. Places I've visited and those I've only imagined.
Every place has its own personality. Some are colorful and energetic. Others are quiet and peaceful. And every once in a while, a place can capture our imagination without our ever having been there.
Places Inbetween is a collection of four contemporary abstract art prints — Frisco, Fargo, Ojai, and Lodi.
I chose the names as much for the way they sound as for the places themselves. As names, I like their rhythm, their poetry, the playful way they roll off the tongue.
The artwork follows a similar idea. Simple geometric shapes, bands of color, and overlapping abstract forms create their own rhythms and relationships. Warm oranges and yellows; cooler blues and greens. Some compositions feel lively and energetic. Others are more muted and contemplative.
These aren't literal portraits of the towns that inspired their names. They're impressions. Explorations of color, shape and line that might suggest a field, a lake, a far horizon...or something entirely different. A few simple shapes and colors can take us on a journey without telling us exactly where we're going.
And perhaps that's what Places Inbetween is really about. They're the spaces between what we see, what we remember, and what we imagine.
Four places. Four impressions. Pure color. And a lot left to the imagination.
